The series, in three paragraphs and a half

Every year since 2008, I produce a mix called La Grande Rétrospective Musicale de l’Année 20xx (which roughly translates to “The Great Musical Retrospective of the Year 20xx”). This special, yearly megamix compiles most of what we could call the “best of” the musical scene for a specific year, covering a vast array of styles from Pop/Rock to House and Dance and Electro, all blended up in a near CD-length long compilation (70-75 minutes in average).

The musical selection is usually based on radio and clubplay charts in Quebec and Canada (I am from Quebec), with some European and American influences to back them up. Some of the songs have been picked based on my personal preferences and discoveries made throughout the year. It’s not always possible to place everything in the mix, for reasons ranging from styles not fitting in to song speeds unsuitable for the mix). We can’t please everyone, even in an hour!

No special “remixes” are used in the production of these mixes (includes remix services such as Ultimix and Funkymix, Crooklyn Clan as well as home-made versions by other DJs). All songs used in these mixes are the original versions, or, in some cases, official remixes or alternate versions (either by personal choice or because said remix was the most played all in all). Sometimes A Cappella versions are used, along with instrumental versions of other songs, thus creating “mashups” and original “remixes” which are done exclusively for these compilations.

These retrospectives come out once a year, and are usually visible to the public near the end of the month of December.

Every compilation is done using Acid Pro, FL Studio and Goldwave software, and take between one to two weeks of work to create.
